Manguinhos

Population: 36,000

Located in the northern part of the city, Manguinhos is less developed than other favelas in the south. It sits just the east of a major north-south highway through the industrial section of Rio. Crime and violence are more prevalent as police entry into the community occurred fairly recently.

Vidigal

 

UPP Implemented: 2012

Population: 13,000

Sitting on Ipanema beach, Vidigal is visible ambling up the iconic Dois Irmãos hills. Because of this location, the community is rapidly gentrifying with new hostels and bars opening up to attract foreign tourists.

Babilônia

 

UPP Implemented: 2009

Population: 1,500

This small community sits on a hill above Leme, at the far east end of Copacabana beach. It shares this hill with its sister community, Chapeu Manguiera. Being situated in Zona Sul, it is experiencing rapid gentrification as its location offers stunning views of the ocean and Copacabana to one side, and Christ the Redeemer on the other.

Rocinha

 

UPP Implemented: 2012

Population: 70,000

Rocinha is probably the most iconic favela in Rio, and is known as the largest in Brazil. It sits between the posh neighborhoods of Gavea and Barra Tijuca in Zona Sul. There are several Jeep tours operating in this favela, as many trendy new hostels are popping up around the community.
